Guest FAQs

How do I get tickets?

You can find all our upcoming events listed on our website. Tickets to upcoming events must be purchased online. We do not sell tickets at the door.

Tickets usually remain on sale up to 24-48 prior to the event, or until they sell out. If tickets are not available, add your name to the waiting list and we will contact you if any spots become available.

The best way to get first dibs on new events as they are announced is to get on our email newsletter.

How do I get in?

When you buy a ticket, you will receive an email prior to the event with detailed instructions on getting into the space, included the door code that allows you to enter the member’s entrance after hours.

To get in, use the North "members" entrance
CSI Members Entrance
on the right hand side there is a black keypad. Use the code you received in the email to open the door.
Take the elevator or stairs up to the 5th floor, and The Depanneur is the door on the South side of the landing.

If for any reason you did not receive your email, or the door code is not working please call or text us at 416-828-1990 or 437-234-9307‬

Can I sit with my friends?

Our dining events are typically served family-style at communal tables of 8 people. We cannot accommodate more than 8 people at a table, but we can seat larger groups next to each other.

We will do our best to ensure that anyone who purchases multiple tickets are seated together. If you are a group of people who have bought tickets separately and wish to be seated together, please drop us an email and let us know so we can plan accordingly.

What if I am late?

We ask that guests arrive by 6:30pm for most of our evening events, and 12pm for most of our daytime classes (unless otherwise specified). Usually there are a few minutes of introductions at the beginning of an event. If you think you will be late (or unable to attend), please drop us a text to the phone number you will receive in your confirmation email.

If you are late, we will hold your seats, and do our best to put food aside for you, but keep in mind that the dishes are plated and served family style.

Also guests are typically seated on a first-come/first-served basis. While we do our best to ensure groups are seated together, latecomers might not be able to choose their seating arrangements.

Do you serve drinks?

Our events are typically BYOB, with no corkage fee. (ie. if you bring a nice bottle of wine, you are pretty much getting dinner for free compared to what that same bottle would cost you at a regular restaurant!)

You are welcome to bring anything you wish to drink, and we are happy to keep them in our fridge for you.

Cold tap water is always on the table. We do not sell any beverages. Some menus might include a cold or hot beverage option; it will be listed in the event description.

How does tipping work?

Tipping is not included, nor expected, but is always deeply appreciated. It is entirely at your discretion based on your satisfaction with your experience. All tips are distributed equally between cooks/instructors and staff working at the event.

You have the option of adding a tip amount when you purchase your ticket. We are currently working on easy ways to offer a tip at the end of an event via a QR code or via a link that will be sent to you by email.

In Canada, tipping on food events is customarily between 10-20%

What is Pay It Forward?

Pay It Forward invites guest to make an optional donation when purchasing a ticket. The funds raised are used to support various initiatives that help support food security locally and globally.

From 2011-2016 The Dep quietly made scores of small Kiva microloans to women food entrepreneurs around the world as part of an informal “Give and Take” experiment in gratitude.

From 2016-2019 The Depanneur was home to Newcomer Kitchen, where we helped put over $150,000 into the pockets of over 80 Syrian families. Newcomer Kitchen subsequently went on to become its own non-profit organization creating social and economic opportunities for newcomer women from all over the world.

During COVID, Pay It Forward help provide hundreds of boxed meals for Fatima House (a women’s shelter around the corner from the old Dep), and the Spadina Fort York Community Care Program.

As part of the 2021 Depanneur Cookbook Kickstarter campaign, $5 per book sold (more than $3500 in total) was donated as Kiva microloans to women food entrepreneurs around the world.

In 2022-23, as part of our Communal Table series with The Bentway, we raised thousands of dollars for Dashmaawaan Bemaadzinjin (They Feed The People), a group providing food for vulnerable Indigenous people in Toronto.

In 2024-25, in conjunction with our Indigenous Food Lab with Chef Taylor Parker, we raised $1600 for Indigenous Seniors Helping Seniors, a group that helps maintain a food pantry for Indigenous elders at Wigwamen Terrace.

Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Our meals are served family-style, which means they are on large platters/bowls for the table to share.

Some chefs/menus will offer meat and/or vegetarian/vegan options, some will not. We try to be as explicit as possible in our menu descriptions so you know exactly what you are getting in advance of buying your ticket.

If you have a specific allergy or sensitivity, let us know. If it possible to make a simple adjustment or omission to an existing dish, we will do our best to accommodate you, but we cannot prepare separate individual meals.

Our kitchen is not vegan, gluten or nut-free, and we cannot guarantee no cross-contamination.

Are you wheelchair accessible?

Sort of. The Dep is on the 5th floor, accessible via an elevator with a door of 30” width. This means that we are able to accommodate many/most, but not all accessibility devices

There is accessible access to the elevator through the main doors, and our washroom is on the same level with a 34” wide door, but has very small (<1”) rise.

An event is sold out; how do I get on the waiting list?

If tickets are no longer available for purchase, you can add your name to the waiting list. If any spots become available, we will send out an email to everyone on the list, and those tickets are then available for purchase on a first-come/first-served basis.

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

Like most kinds of ticketed events - e.g. a concert, play or sporting event - we do not offer credit or refunds for unused tickets. This is also because our chefs/instructors purchase and prepare ingredients according to the number of tickets sold.

If you are unable to attend an event, you are welcome to sell or gift your tickets to anyone you wish, they just need to mention your name when they arrive.

Alternatively, we can release your ticket, making it available for purchase online. If someone else takes your spot, then we can issue you a store credit that can be applied to any future Depanneur event, but we cannot refund or credit unused tickets.

Do you sell Gift Certificates?

You betcha! You can get them here, and they can be applied to any upcoming event at The Dep.

Are you still involved with Syrian refugees/Newcomer Kitchen?

The Depanneur owner Len Senater, together with Cara Benjamin-Pace helped co-found Newcomer Kitchen in 2016 as a response to the sudden influx of refugees from the Syrian civil war. Over the next 3 years, with the invaluable assistance of Rahaf Alakbani, Esmaeel Aboufakher and Tamara Chaikin, it would help put more than $150,000 into the pockets of more than 80 newly-arrived Syrian families.

In 2019 Newcomer Kitchen became its own separate non-profit organization that continued to create social and economic opportunities for newcomer women from all over the world. Dep founder Len Senater remained on the board for several more years, but was no longer directly involved in day-to-day operations.

In 2025 Newcomer Kitchen lost its IRCC government funding and has temporarily closed pending sourcing new funding.
